Here's an email that I received from the Humane Society of Missouri. They recently made the largest bust of a dog fighting ring.
"Gizmo was repeatedly forced to fight other dogs. When rescued, he had multiple scars, old and new, all over his body.
Yesterday, Gizmo and the hundreds of dogs rescued by the Humane Society of Missouri in the largest dog fighting raid and rescue in US history, received a measure of justice.
A fifth admitted dog fighter was sentenced in US District Court in Kansas City to serve 16 months in federal prison. His prison time will be followed by three years of probation during which he will not be allowed to own any dogs. U.S. District Judge Ortrie Smith commented that it seemed reasonable that a person convicted of dog fighting should not own other dogs.
We also applaud Judge Smith for imposing this sentence which significantly exceeds current federal sentencing guidelines. However, we at the Humane Society of Missouri believe federal and state dog fighting penalties and sentences should be strengthened to reflect the very serious nature of this heinous crime."
