To get messages out of the state we have to burn sticks and then inscribe arcane symbols on dried corn husks. With the flooding, we might not have enough writing materials next year.

So anyway, if the judge didn't say that, the defendants are liars. If the judge did say that, it was probably unethical of him to do so (and would be grounds for the prosecution to get a new judge, I would imagine).
