    It's getting tougher for the dishonest, the mentally unstable and the overweight to get hired as Cook County jail guards these days. As a result, fewer guards are getting hired.

    Until recently, would-be correctional officers only had to pass a drug test, a criminal background check and a physical agility test that included bending over and picking up a chair.

    This guy might have a point.

    He claims that by requiring higher physical and psychological standards, he will save the jail a lot of headaches down the road. Since it's almost impossible to fire a county employee, he just wants to hire better ones up front. Makes sense, I guess.

    Polygraphs must be admissable in Illinois. In Michigan, employers can't use them in screening potential employees.

    They're trying to avoid lawsuits down the line. It's not uncommon to have an employer do a thorough background check (like Choice Point) and in some cases, like working for a school system or the Catholic Church, you need to give them your fingerprints. The Fed, of course, has many jobs requiring security clearances and these often mean lie detector tests on a regular basis. From what I hear, Washington is getting clearance-happy: even some of the lowest level positions are requiring security clearances these days.
