Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) has continued to take a hammering over the recess for his controversial role at the heart of the health care bill's abortion debate, prompting speculation that he is considering retirement.

Press Secretary Michelle Begnoche didn't rule out such a scenario in a statement Wednesday, but she also indicated that "campaign plans are proceeding."

"Every two years, Congressman Stupak discusses with his family and his constituents whether to seek re-election. He believes that is what the people of the First District of Michigan deserve," Begnoche wrote in an e-mail.

Grandpa lives in his district. He likes Stupak, but never voted for him. Grandpa says "He's a good man, for a democrat".

If he retires, his district will probably elect a republican. It's Michigan, but the only liberal part of that large district is Traverse City. The rest is rural, small town and conservative.

Oh, they pay a price. All of them who are retiring rather than take the beating are paying a price.

Next to being President, Congress is the ultimate ego trip. Retiring because you want to retire is one thing; retiring because you know the people in your state are going to boot you out is a slap in the face to those egomaniacal bottom feeders.

One plus is, they're going back into the real world and will have to live with the mess they've created. That will be a culture shock.

Not quite the shock you would anticipate. They'll get a pension more generous than any of us could even dream about and will land some sort of cushy job, usually as a lobbyist or a partnership in a law firm (if they're an attorney, which many of them are).

That they, being representatives of the people and doing the will of the people, voted to enact. Things like benefit packages including retirement and Congressional pay raises, should be voted on by the people.

I think any Congressional pay raises should be by popular vote during each Presidential election year. The raise should never be more than 3%. Ideally, I don't think Congress should receive a salary higher than the average income in their home state. They're supposed to be servants of, not rulers over, the people.

My father knows Stupak personally and has always said he is a jerk.

If he retires, good riddance. If he doesn't retire, he should lose in the election for what he did and then good riddance anyway.
