President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, made $US5.5 million ($5.9 million) last year, largely on sales of his books, and paid nearly $US1.8 million in federal income tax, according to the tax return they released on Thursday.

The Obamas gave $US329,000 to charities in 2009, including $US50,000 each to CARE and the United Negro College Fund. The President also donated his $US1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize award to 10 charities.

The vast majority of the Obamas' earnings continue to come from sales of the President's books, Dreams From My Father and The Audacity of Hope, which have netted the couple several million dollars in recent years.

The Obamas paid $US163,303 in Illinois income taxes. In 2008, when Mr Obama was campaigning for president, he and his wife earned $US2.7 million and paid $US855,323 in federal income tax. Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, reported an adjusted gross income of $US333,182 for 2009. They paid $US71,147 in federal income taxes, $US12,420 in Delaware income taxes and $US1477 in Virginia income taxes.

The Bidens gave $US4820 to charity, in cash and in-kind donations.
So much for being one of the "common man", wonder how much DUers want him to pay in tax

I for one will not begrudge him for being succesful. Kind of goes against what we stand for when we take a look at someone who started out as he did, and climbed to where he did. As long as he continues to pay up like he's making everyone else do, then that's all I'm gonna care about.
In most sports, cold-cocking an opposing player repeatedly in the face with a series of gigantic Slovakian uppercuts would get you a multi-game suspension without pay.

In hockey, it means you have to sit in the penalty box for five minutes.

I don't mind a POTUS making all they can either, that's what living in a free capitalist country is all about.

What I do have problem with, is a socialist commie elitist that espouses one thing and does another. Isn't income redistribution what his whole administration is about (direct quote). Then we need to redistribute everyone's income, including Barry's. He should fork all that over to the poor - anything over his $250,000 threshold.

Our income level is considerably lower than the Bidens' and I notice our charitable donations are rather higher.

Yes, that's the issue. In a nutshell.

I think Barky's income over $250K should be distributed, not to the poor (who have no idea what to do with money any fucking way) but to committed capitalists who would turn a profit with it.

He should get to keep $250,000; and then pay 38% tax on it. The rest should go towards something useful like the Murtha airport that serves 3 people, or the turtle crossing roadway project that employed 2, or a study of rare beetle mating rituals, or one of those other really good programs that we are all forced to pay for.
