    Some Wind Power Calculations

I was just looking at the task of providing wind power to according to T Boone Pickens Plan. It is not a pretty picture. But here is a try at it.

TX power Requirement (MW).................. 104,754 MW
Amount of Wind Power Desired.............. 20.00%
MW of Wind .................................... 20950.8 MW
    Area per Megawatt.................................... 0.02 MW/Acre
    Efficiency.................................... 35.00% percent
Sq Miles Wind Power.................................... 2992971.4 Acres
    Acres / Sq MIle.................................... 640 SqMi/A
Actual Sq Miles Req.................................... 4676.52 sq miles
    Distance from Minot ND
to Big Bend TX.................................... 1300 miles
    Width of Corridor.................................... 3.60 miles
    Watts per Tower.................................... 1.5 MW
    Quantity towers.................................... 13,967 units
Cost per tower.................................... $ 5,000,000 each
    Tower Cost.................................... $ 69,836 million
    Transmission Lines.................................... $ 10,000 million
    Total Cost.................................... $ 79,836 million

So it isn't too bad about $80 Billion to provide 20 percent of Texas's power requirements. :eek:Oh wait, TB Pickens was talking 20 percent for the whole US.. Well that will take a little more work.

Mr. Bush has the correct answer to our power generation problem.

Get the country fully involved in a major Middle East conflict - inflame the entire region - invade and nationalise all major oil producing states and, with the help of John McCain’s two terms - keep the US in the region for a century. End of the problem.

War is cheaper. And a great deal more profitable.
At Coretta Scott King's funeral in early 2006, Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, leaned over to him and whispered, "The torch is being passed to you." "A chill went up my spine," Obama told an aide. (Newsweek)

Too bad were not at war for oil.

What strikes me is the efficiency. 35%

So for my $80B investment, it doensn't work 65% of the time?

So to be cost effective, your electricity bill will need to go up 285%

Wind power is only cost effective at the current power price levels

I think wind power as PART of a national energy plan is a great idea and should be pursued where feasible.

Oops!!! Sorry!!! Those nasty wind turbines kill birdies and spoil some elected officials views. Never mind.

Pickens did not become a billionaire in the energy business by being a fool. He will profit off of wind power by using Federal subsidy dollars. I think natural gas is a better alternative along with solar & nuke.

They are there now. Of course many less than a couple months ago. Why do you hate your country so much?
