    OMG!!!

Shutdown Would Mean Closing Of State Parks, DMV, Courts, N.Y. Lottery

    ALBANY (CBS) ―

Chaos and anarchy. That's what New York Gov. David Paterson is warning if he's forced to shut down the government in a few days.

The clowns in the state Legislature, now deadlocked for 71 days on the budget, are ready to take down the "big tent" and bring state government to a standstill. At least that's what Paterson thinks.

"No one knows the full ramifications of a government shutdown," said Paterson. "It would create unimaginable chaos around the state and the greater metropolitan areas."

Such chaos includes closing all state parks, motor vehicles offices, courts, and even the lottery. Public assistance payments would not be made and unemployment payments might also be held up.

    Dear God Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! :D
May the FORCE be with you!

This is political posturing at its best.

The DMV is too much of a cash cow for any government to shut it down. Delaying welfare payments is just a way to whip up the crowd. Closing state parks is a symbolic gesture.

The Republican demands to balance the budget seem to make some actual sense: no raise for welfare recipients, removing welfare recipients from the rolls if they fail to comply with work/training requirements, and reducing the "allowance" given to people in drug and alcohol rehab.

    Wow, that's harsh.

Notice how they never threaten to shut down their own offices and staff - never the desk jobs at the capital - it's always the police or the fireman - the areas of the state machine that directly interface with the public.

    It's showmanship, no doubt.

Here in Ft Worth our mayor and city council, closed some library branches, shortened their hours of operations, delayed raises and furloughed all city employees/closed offices 2 days a month. All this to balance the budget. It's working, we have had no tax increases and the property taxes went down this year, all this with no noticeable bumps in city services.

Corzine shut down NJ during 4th of July week in 2007 meaning the casinos couldn't be open. I don't think they've recovered yet.

Michigan went through this a couple of years ago. The governor and the legislature couldn't agree, and they would go to the deadline, then extend their temporary budget for another month.

Each time, they would tell us that we might not have to report to work the next day, and it was always settled after midnight, so we didn't shut down. One of those times was on a Sunday, and I was driving back from my sister's house. They never completely shut the state down, but the first thing they did was close all the public rest areas on the freeways. I stopped going to those, anyways, because they replaced all the Coke machines with juice and water machines.
