Robert Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan at age 24
Here is a quote from Byrd:
" I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. ”
He apologized for his intolerance years later, but I always felt he was a bigot. I am sorry he is ill, he has done some good in his days, but a part of me can't forget his past.

Southern Democrats were racial bigots After LBJ signed it they became Republicans, and the Democrats lost the south just as LBJ predicted
TWO prominent southern opponents to civil rights became Republicans - and a handful of minor characters - that is IT. THE REST were, and remained DEMOCRATS.

This message, as I say, is to Congress. The rest of the people know the condition of the country, for they live in it, but Congress has no idea what is going on in America, so the president has to tell 'em." ~ Will Rogers
