Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday escaped an assassination attempt when his procession was targeted by a bomb, Al Arabiya TV reported.

The Iranian presidency confirmed the attack, which left a number of injured people.

The blast took place in Hamadan as Ahmadinejad was about to address a crowd, and the attacker was arrested on the spot.

    Damn!

I somehow doubt that the guy "arrested on the spot" was the true culprit.
In most sports, cold-cocking an opposing player repeatedly in the face with a series of gigantic Slovakian uppercuts would get you a multi-game suspension without pay.

In hockey, it means you have to sit in the penalty box for five minutes.

The Iranians actually denied that it was an attack.

    TEHRAN (Agencies)

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's motorcade was not attacked by a grenade on Wednesday, an official in his media office told AFP, explaining that an explosion was from a "firecracker."

"It was a firecracker, and a statement will be released soon," the source said.

He was responding to reports on a conservative website that a hand grenade had exploded next to a vehicle carrying reporters accompanying the president in the western city of Hamadan.

Iran's Arabic-language al-Alam TV reported that the firecracker was set off to cheer the president. (ROFLOL)

Ahmadinejad later delivered a live televised speech to locals gathered in a stadium and made no reference to the alleged incident.

During a speech to a conference of expatriate Iranians in Tehran this week, Ahmadinejad said he believed he was the target of an assassination plot by Israel. "The stupid Zionists have hired mercenaries to assassinate me," he said.

One of Ahmadinejad's trademarks has been constant travel around his vast country to deliver provocative speeches before outwardly adoring crowds who shout "death" to Iran's foes.
    Interesting implications:

    • The denial means that it's not an attempt by the regime to create an incident and an excuse for a backlash against the opposition.
    • Opposition to Ahmedinejad is now growing violent. Up until now, the Iranian resistance was mostly non-violent, but capable of self-defense. At least one element has now gone on the offense. This is a critical change in the dynamic of Iran's internal politics. This change will have several immediate effects:
    • The opposition will become bolder.
    • The mullahs will become more paranoid. Expect crackdowns, not just on the opposition, but against all sorts of benign activities. Also, there will be an increase in the frequency and brutality of executions, especially for Sharia-related offenses.
  5. Ahmedinejad's security is lax. This parallels an interesting but little-known fact about Germany, namely that there were a number of attempts on Hitler's life, including several bombs (not just the Von-Stauffenberg plot), which the SS failed to identify. Hitler only survived through luck, but his insistence on using the SS as his security instead of professional police or security specialists led to his vulnerability. Ahmedinejad came out of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, their SS equivalent. I wonder if they are his security team, as well.

If the opposition over throws the current Iranian government - rest assured that Obama will send in troops to help put Ahmadinejad back in power.

I love how it keeps changing

Firecracker causes embarrassment for president in Hamedan
Hamedan, August 4, IRNA ó A young boy threw firecracker at motorcade of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to celebrate his arrival in Hamadan causing embarrassment.

The incident did not halt the welcoming ceremony but some foreign media tried to get fish from troubled waters and imply that it was an assassination attempt to make use of it.

The Iranian youth during special ceremonies such as New Year festivals or football matches use firecrackers as sign of jubilation.

Unfortunately, a number of domestic media reported it as explosion of hand grenade causing ambiguity.

An official at Hamedan province governorís office told IRNA correspondent that the explosion of the firecracker left no damage on people or property.

    ------

First it was a number of injured

    Then attacker arrested
Now it was a young boy

No, but he'll use every diplomatic tool in his arsenal to pressure the new government.

Generally, when you throw a firecracker at a motorcade, it's because you are trying to disrupt it. If people were injured, then it wasn't a firecracker, although it may have been something like an M-80. But the regime's immediate reflex was to try to spin the incident from an attack to a show of support. And, naturally, nothing in their media can be taken at face value (it's almost as untrustworthy as ours :D).

One thing for certain. Obama will do nothing to help the resistance to the current Government. I would hope he wouldn't impede them in any way. But you never can tell with the 0.
