In my opinion, the current debate over the 14th Amendment is another Republican Schiavo; a bridge too far. Not only is it making the Center (where elections are won and lost) think twice about the Republican Party, it is ensuring the rising Hispanic demographic will eschew those who question their very citizenship.
Not that it would make any difference in repealing an entire amendment, but I believe the problem with Schiavo was that NO ONE liked the idea of federal politicians chess-piecing what is essentially a state/local matter.
Could be wrong, though...
