The Australian Defence Force is scheduled to give a press conference about an "incident" in Afghanistan overnight An Australian soldier has died during a three-hour firefight with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.

Defence Force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston said the 28-year-old Lance Corporal, who was married and had a young family, was on patrol in the Green Zone when fired upon by a number of insurgents yesterday morning (local time).

Immediate first aid was given, but the soldier was unable to be saved. His family has specifically requested that his name is not released at this stage.

This brings the total to 21 dead. All the Taliban have done is pissed us off. VERY bad mistake.

I pray that our leaders do not make their deaths worthless by a precipitous withdrawal.
Stand up for what is right, even if you have to stand alone.

Thank you to all. We are NOT walking away. The troops have made their position clear - we stay, we fight, and we kick their asses.

When I was at Balad, the Australians ran the hospital, and did a superb job. Thorough professionals, through and through. I'm sorry to hear about the most recent loss.

Before you can do things for people, you must be the kind of man who can get things done. But to get things done, you must love the doing, not the people!
