Maine editor apologizes to readers for Ramadan story on 9/11
The editor and publisher of The Portland Press Herald in Maine has apologized to its readers in an open letter for what he said was a lack of sensitivity in running a front page story on Saturday on the end of the Muslim holiday of Ramadan without balancing it with front-page story on the "painful memories" of the 9/11 attacks.
"Many saw Saturday's front-page story and photo regarding the local observance of the end of Ramadan as offensive, particularly on the day, Sept. 11, when our nation and the world were paying tribute to those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks nine years ago," Richard L.Connor writes in Sunday's paper. "We have acknowledged that we erred by at least not offering balance to the story and its prominent position on the front page."
The newspaper, he says, received some sharp criticism in comments on its Facebook page and on its website.
"In hindsight, it is clear that we should have handled this differently and with greater sensitivity toward the painful memories stirred by the anniversary of 9/11," he writes.

1. WTF is going on in this damn country of ours....
Why would any one be offended by a story regarding the Muslim holiday, even if it was done on September 11th. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.....ISLAM DID NOT ATTACK US ON 911!!!!!! This country is going down the toilet fast.
Adult=far left loon. Yep, a minority all right. A loud minority, but a minority never the less.FiveGoodMen Donating Member (1000+ posts) Fri Sep-17-10 01:10 PM

I don't think that one American in a hundred qualifies as any sort of adult.

3. why don't we have annual Angstfests on
Oklahoma City bomber anniversaries? How many people even remember what day that happened?
Wasn't it on Patriot's Day? So we can have front page coverage of Patriot's day, complete with re-enactments...and not balance that with annual angst over the first major terrorist act on US soil by a self-proclaimed Patriot?
But we're not a nation of bigots. Not one little bit.
