Probably about the 4th person to agree with this. I think McCain needs to go right on his VP choice, not left, but I do like Joe Lieberman. I don't agree with all of his positions (abortion, gay marriage, etc), but respect his honesty and ethics. At least he understands GWOT.
Because most of those countries are socialist. Not much class envy when everybody is equally miserable. I bet our violent crime rate is higher all around, but that doesn't negate what I say. I would be interested to compare our abortion rate to Europe's. I bet they have less accidental pregnancies. I'm not going to google it, but if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
I think in general there is a lower abortion rate in European countries, but they don't agonize over the question in general. They think it's the woman's business.
Actually, I have been hearing some noise about Lieberman and my conservative friends always liked him. There is also the fact that Senator Lieberman was challenged in 2006 (in the Democratic primary) by Ned Lamont who was backed by none other than Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. These two far lefters were flanking Lamont when he gave his victory speech. (You just KNOW Donna Brazile was in the background somewhere!) The more centrist Lieberman went independent and eventually won the election as an independent but he could only do that because he had strong Republican support.
Now Lieberman is speaking at GOP convention. As a strong backer of Israel and the current war against terrorism, Lieberman also brings more socially tolerant credentials, though he is in no way a leftie wingnut. He is also a religious Jew and that carries weight in some quarters.
I don't know what his role in a McCain administration will be--if any--but when I heard it floated that he might be being considered for VP, I wondered how it would fly with conservatives. I would feel very comfortable with a McCain/Lieberman ticket, but then I am a centrist Dem.
But I think you all are right that a cabinet position might be a better idea. Maybe Homeland Security?
