President Obama to award George H.W. Bush the Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Obama dropped a bipartisan bombshell today, announcing he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom next year to ex-President George H.W. Bush.

The magnanimous gesture of bestowing the nation’s highest civilian honor to the 41st U.S. President came a day after ex-President George W. Bush gave a respectful nod to Obama at the groundbreaking of his library in Dallas.

“The decisions of governing are on another President’s desk, and he deserves to make them without criticism from me,” Bush said at the site of his future library at Southern Methodist University.

NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, St. Louis (baseball) Hall of Famer Stan Musial, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Wall Street wizard Warren Buffett top the list of scholars, athletes, artists, achievers and do-gooders who will be presented the award at a White House ceremony early next year.

“These outstanding honorees come from a broad range of backgrounds and they’ve excelled in a broad range of fields, but all of them have lived extraordinary lives that have inspired us, enriched our culture, and made our country and our world a better place. I look forward to awarding them this honor,” Obama said.

The rest of the list includes civil rights activist Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), environmentalist John H. Adams, poet Maya Angelou, Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein, optometrist murdered by the Taliban Dr. Tom Little, civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez, disabled rights advocate Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith and former AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney.

    12. He's really working hard to lose our votes, isn't he?

I really don't care if he loses. I really don't.

But, of course, he wouldn't have made this "gesture" unless he thought he was buying something with it. I'm guessing, his second term. This is akin to giving that bastard Bush a pardon, and the reason for it, is to close the door on all the crooked shit the Republicans got away with, and set the stage for a Jeb Bush run in office.

Shame on you, Obama. For Shame.

They have such a knee jerk reaction that many of them reply as though it is President George W Bush is getting the honor.

    59. Some might be worried, but the President isn't one of them who is.

Once again, this isn't for the pubs, it's for the country. We all need to have a little pride in the good things people do instead of putting everything down. It's easy to be negative, harder to admit not everything is wrong.

    73. What is so RIGHT about GHW Bush?

Edited on Thu Nov-18-10 11:57 AM by TheWatcher
How does fellating and fawning over him help the country?

The man was a fucking monster, and that is but a small part of it.

Oh, but we just need to ignore everything, and "move on". :"For The Good Of the Country."

Hell, maybe we should give one to Charles Manson eventually.

He wasn't such a bad guy after all.

I mean he MEANT well, and had strong convictions, even if his actions WERE a little misguided.

    Let's not be so negative.

I have no doubt W's little trinket will be along sometime soon.

Obama is now trying to appeal to a larger number of voters, but the dimwitted Moonbats don't get it.

Backlash, who are you fooling: you'll vote for Obama next time because he knows as a good little drone you will vote Democrat even if they were cutting the heads off two-year old kids right in front of you because are too stupid/crazy not to. You threw free will and common sense out the door a long time ago.

    Politics aside:

George HW Bush served in the military in WWII
    He was an ambassador
He was the director of the CIA
    He served in congress
He was Vice President for 8 years
He was President for 4 years, and presided during the collapse of european communism.

That is a pretty good record of accomplishments and service to his country. On top of that, he's an older guy who is in good health and lives an active lifestyle. Give him the honor now, while he and his family can appreciate it properly. I'm sure the timing works for Obama right now, with the recent elections and all, but it is still a good thing to do.

    29. Rumsfeld already has one.
    Uh oh. Rummy got one?

    Oops!

He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction (PMOFWD) back in 1977. For what, I have no idea. I guess for being a "ruthless little bastard," in the words of Richard Nixon.
And who was President in 1977?

    Whoops!
