This will go down as the strangest moment in Barry's presidency for me thus far. He is the POTUS, he walks out with a past potus and announces that he's worried about his wife getting mad because he's late to meet her, then turns the presidential podium over to a past POTUS who's retired (instead of VP) to take over for him. Bizarre to say the least.
Okay, here is the obvious Republican strategy:
Extend the tax cuts for one year as is, so that when they come up again, Republicans own the house. Extend unemployment benefits for fifteen months, which sounds like a win for the Democrats, but isn't. Let them try to extend them again in April 2012, while people are filing their taxes and feeling the pain of Democratic class warfare. Strip everything else out of the bill and fight tooth and nail against more spending. And, if the Dems try to hold the bill hostage, let them. A Republican house can pass the bills on January 20th and send them to the Senate, where a more Republican (and conservative) caucus will fight for them. When the media tries to claim that the unemployment benefits are expiring during the holidays, point to Pelosi as the culprit and stand firm. The important thing is to stand on principle and fight the additional earmarks that Democrats are including, for the sole purpose of infuriating the tea partiers. Don't give them ammunition.
