Don't know where I got it but it essentially killed my computer. It happened yesterday and it was nuts. It affected everything and it was one of those where it wants you to get a specific anti-virus program. I should have written down the company name so I could sue them. It shut down everything. And I'm going to write a strongly worded letter to McAfee as this virus completely annihilated them. I couldn't run anything so I shut down, rebooted and tried to run fixes and none worked. I even tried to reset to an earlier date, nothing. I couldn't even boot up completely. I was forced to reformat and so far so good but gone are a lot of stuff I had. Pictures and old articles I had written for the website I used to work for. Live and learn I guess.

External hard drives. I keep all of my music, pictures, video's, etc. all backed up on an external hard drive in the event something like that happens.
In most sports, cold-cocking an opposing player repeatedly in the face with a series of gigantic Slovakian uppercuts would get you a multi-game suspension without pay.

In hockey, it means you have to sit in the penalty box for five minutes.

My wife had something like that on her laptop. She called it "Ransom" ware. She had to set up an admin. account to get around it.

So far, **knock wood**, we've never had to reformat. I was seriously stressed yesterday as I just got through uploading all the Christmas pics and videos, but hadn't backed them up...and had deleted them from the camera. Thankfully, whatever was wrong seems to have been repaired by the original installation disc. Definitely planning to spend several hours this weekend running scans and burning CDs.

Our last major bug, I read a hint online about looking at running programs through Windows Defender, since Taskmanager in Vista totally sucks. I found the program and shut it down, then used Malwarebytes to zap that file and find the remaining infection.

In actual dollars, President Obama’s $4.4 trillion in deficit spending in just three years is 37 percent higher than the previous record of $3.2 trillion (held by President George W. Bush) in deficit spending for an entire presidency. It’s no small feat to demolish an 8-year record in just 3 years.

Under Obama’s own projections, interest payments on the debt are on course to triple from 2010 (his first budgetary year) to 2018, climbing from $196 billion to $685 billion annually.

Did you ever find out what the name of the virus is?
Sounds like a nasty one. I back up all my documents
and photos to thumb drives periodically.

Some of these viruses will plant several copies of themselves on all your drives.
How is obama working out for you?

If you keep them plugged in, yes.

When putting new pictures onto your machine, copy them to the hard drive, then unplug it and put it away. That way when you get a virus, you greatly mitigate the risk of losing all of that stuff.

In most cases yes but some viruses will remain dormant for long periods and can escape detection from some antivirus programs. They will migrate to your external drives during backup transfers and awaken months later.
I have 10 TB of external storage on several drives, I still have everything i saved on my first windows computers from the 90s, about 5 years ago I had a virus like I have described wake up in everything. Trend Micro, Panda, Norton, Mcfee, were all useless Kaspersky and Avast were suspenseful in cleaning up everything.
The drive enclosures I use now are the sata Toaster type were you insert your drives head down in an open slot and remove them when your finished. There is nothing 100% safe.

I say the perps should be hunted down and torture killed live online. If we can find kiddy porn perps, we can find these guys too. I'd even pay an access fee to watch the vermin get exterminated.
