Did you ever find out what the name of the virus is?
Sounds like a nasty one. I back up all my documents
and photos to thumb drives periodically.

Unfortunately no but I wish I did. Usually when something like this happens, I can restore to an earlier point, reboot, run all my virus and adaware stuff, and be fine but this time it wouldn't reboot into windows so I was screwed.
