    President Obama spoke last night about the need to “win the race to educate our kids” and asked if we as Americans are “willing to do what’s necessary to give every child a chance to succeed.” He highlighted one school in particular—Bruce Randolph School in Denver.

    “Three years ago, it was rated one of the worst schools in Colorado; located on turf between two rival gangs,” Obama said. “But last May, 97 percent of the seniors received their diploma. Most will be the first in their family to go to college.”

    What Obama failed to mention is how Bruce Randolph turned its situation around: firing teachers at will after being granted an exemption from union rules.
    snip
    Bruce Randolph was a middle school when it opened in 2002. In 2007, Denver Public Schools gave Bruce Randolph School permission to operate autonomously. It was the first school in the state to be granted autonomy from district and union rules.

    Each teacher then had to reapply for his or her job. A published report said only six teachers remained.

    Praising a school that fired almost the entire faculty without input from the local union probably doesn’t sit well with national teachers unions, who gave the Democrats nearly $5 million total in 2008.

    Teacher's unions piss everyone off, even liberals.

    Big city schoolteachers make very good money, considering some of their results. They work 9 months of the year, they get better medical benefits than congress, and they go on strke if any of that is threatened in the slightest. At least, that is the case in Detroit, where the teachers make as much as those in Grosse Pointe or Birmingham, but only graduate 35-40% of students (Birmingham and GP have high success rates and very low drop-out rates).

    Released from district rules, eh?

    I think you could solve most problems in schools by tossing 5-10% of the students.

    True. But most politicians see education as a right. When a problem child gets tossed from a school, the government has to put them somewhere else. So the problem never gets solved, just shuffled around.
    Liberals are proof that evolution is only a theory. Nothing that stupid could evolve past a monkey.

    Obama specifically said in his speech that we need to stop making excuses for bad teachers.

    I sort of think of education as a right. If somebody is making a lot of trouble at the school (discipline problem, dangerous, etc), then they should be put in a school for specifically those kind of kids. If somebody has a lot of academic problems, then they should still be worked with (unless it can be shown that it's all about laziness).

    Disruptive and non-cooperative children have the God given right to an ass whooping!
    Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil;
    Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness;
    Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
    21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
    And clever in their own sight! Isaiah 5:20-21 NASB
