AUSTIN — Texas is preparing to give college students and professors the right to carry guns on campus, adding momentum to a national campaign to open this part of society to firearms.

More than half the members of the Texas House have signed on as co-authors of a measure directing universities to allow concealed handguns. The Senate passed a similar bill in 2009 and is expected to do so again. Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who sometimes packs a pistol when he jogs, has said he's in favor of the idea.

Texas has become a prime battleground for the issue because of its gun culture and its size, with 38 public universities and more than 500,000 students. It would become the second state, following Utah, to pass such a broad-based law. Colorado gives colleges the option and several have allowed handguns.

Rick Perry owns he takes his gun jogging with him and one time nailed a coyote that tried to attack his dog

AUSTIN, Texas — Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.

Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.

Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger – loaded with hollow-point bullets – when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He'd also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.

You're right, due to the political implications.

Surely, responsible gun ownership is just as important as responsible sexual conduct and colleges are all about responsible, and diverse, sexual conduct. ;)

I carried my gun with me on campus both times attending college.
I was a carrier before being a carrier was in vogue so to speak.
I find Don't Ask Don't Tell works well for more than just one type of packing.

Personally, I would recommend a revolver for most "up close and personal" defense situations for a man or woman.
Semi-auto's need 2 hands to rack the action unless you always keep one in the chamber. Also some SA's will stovepipe depending on the ammunition used and while a 380 is not bad (I have a Walther PPK/S) it is still a mouse gun.

My personal favorite is my Charter Arms Bulldog (44 Special)

Pull trigger, goes boom, makes big hole and smaller than most SA 9mm.

I'm a revolver fan, myself. Although semi-autos are much more fun at the range, revolvers are a girl's best friend. My carry weapon is a revolver and I have full confidence in both of us. ;)
