I'm afraid I think McCain just made himself the definite favourite.

DU's celebration at his selection of running mate is massively misplaced, I think.
:-She will play very well with the right(er) wing on the Republican party, who had previously been lukewarm at best about McCain, helping shore up one of his biggest problems.
:-She will massively reduce McCain and the Republicans' vulnerability to attacks based on the fact that they're a party of rich dead white European males.
:-She's only the second ever female running mate, which makes her newsworthy and exciting, something that Biden sadly isn't.
:-It also makes McCain's campaign less obviously "more of the same" as opposed to "change".
:-She'll help exploit divisions in the Democratic party left by the Primary (although hopefully most of those have healed by now).
:-She's reputedly a skilled debator, while Biden is verbose and gaffe-prone.
:-Her inexperience isn't something the Democrats can safely attack.
:-The timing of the announcement knocked Obama of the front page. McCain already had the momentum, and I think this will solidify this.
All in all, I think that DU celebrating McCain's choice of running mate is like turkies celebrating thanksgiving.
