Libyans in Benghazi are "safer as a result" of the U.S. military's assault on Muammar Qadhafi's forces, who were "poised" to enter the city, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday.

"The nightly news cannot cover a humanitarian crisis that thankfully did not happen, but it is important to remember that many, many Libyans are safer today because the international community took action," Clinton told reporters at the State Department.

Asked if people close to Qadhafi are reaching out to save themselves or if the Libyan colonel is looking for a way out, Clinton responded, "We've been hearing a lot of things from many different sources."
