    WASHINGTON (Map, News) -

D.C. police will seal off entire neighborhoods, set up checkpoints and kick out strangers under a new program that D.C. officials hope will help them rescue the city from its out-of-control violence.

Under an executive order expected to be announced today, police Chief Cathy L. Lanier will have the authority to designate “Neighborhood Safety Zones.” At least six officers will man cordons around those zones and demand identification from people coming in and out of them. Anyone who doesn’t live there, work there or have “legitimate reason” to be there will be sent away or face arrest, documents obtained by The Examiner show.

Lanier has been struggling to reverse D.C.’s spiraling crime rate but has been forced by public outcry to scale back several initiatives including her “All Hands on Deck” weekends and plans for warrantless, door-to-door searches for drugs and guns.

Under today’s proposal, the no-go zones will last up to 10 days, according to internal police documents. Front-line officers are already being signed up for training on running the blue curtains.

A white female police chief. No wonder they're upset over there.

Someone will sue on the grounds of profiling/discrimination and this will be stopped. I find it disturbing police would find such policies acceptable, but on the other side of it they are concentrating their forces in problem areas and leaving everyone else alone.

I don't know how Washington is now, but when I lived there years ago, there were sections of the city that weren't safe day or night. Lorton Prison, from what I remember, had many prisoners from the Anacostia area, so many that there was a Washington Post article on it. Lorton is in Northern Virginia and went from being the boondocks to suburbia while I lived there.

    IT'S A QUAGMIRE: U.S. out of D.C. now!

Nothing we can do will stop these people from committing senseless acts of violence. It's in their culture. The best thing we can do is to withdraw and leave them to each other. . . .

UPDATE: Related thoughts here. "Is this a fair application of the Anti-war argument that Iraqis are incapable of peaceful democracy? If not why?"

    A word to Nashville _ B.

They did all that stuff you suggested in DC already, that's why the city is a sh*t hole now.
