Deferments, asthma kept Biden out of Vietnam

By RANDALL CHASE 10 hours ago

DOVER, Del. (AP) Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden received five student draft deferments during the Vietnam War, the same number of deferments received by Vice President Dick Cheney, and later was disqualified from service because of asthma as a teenager.

Officials with Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's campaign released Biden's Selective Service records at the request of The Associated Press. Less detailed records were available from a National Archives facility in Philadelphia.

According to the documents, Biden, 65, received several deferments while he was an undergraduate at the University of Delaware and later as a law student at Syracuse University. A month after undergoing a physical exam in April 1968, Biden received a Selective Service classification of 1-Y, meaning he was available for service only in the event of national emergency.
In "Promises to Keep," a memoir that was published last year and became an instant best-seller after he was tapped as Obama's running mate, Biden never mentions his asthma, recounting an active childhood, work as a lifeguard and football exploits in high school.
The longest winded Senator in history has ASTHMA??
This is bigger than presidential politics. This is a battle for America.

Asthma is a legitimate out from service. If you have an attack you not only can't fire a gun, you can't walk. A real problem in combat.

Not that I know if Biden had asthma. just saying it IS a legitimate ailment.

    AP sinks lower and lower

What is the point of an article stating how many draft deferments Biden received during the Vietnam War? Why is this relevant, other than to once again mention McLame was a POW?
But Republican deferments are fair game.

My son has asthma and he never told anybody about it when he joined the Army last year and he made it though the training just fine. In fact he came in the top 10% of his Cav Scout OSUT PT scores.

He did, however, say that in Korea it bothered him some during the winter when he was doing hard PT but he just soaked it up.

Joe Biden could have done the same.

That's the democratic party. Separate, but equal.
