The Zero Population Growth people are always creepy. I really don't ever want to find out what they would do to obtain that goal, if they were given free range to do so. Notice how they do not look like hippies. They are too serious to wear hippie clothes.

Nova's comments about the expense of housing in Santa Cruz is dead on. We have The People's Republic of Ann Arbor, here. It is a very expensive city to live in-partly because it's university town, but partly because the taxes are so high.

Michigan's 2nd and 3rd largest cities (Grand Rapids and Warren) have recycling programs similar to Ann Arbor's, higher populations and much higher crime rates, and the taxes are substantially lower. GR is a pretty conservative place, too.

I thought they looked Hippie-ish to me. The guy with the beard looked like George Bernard Shaw for Christ's sake.

And yeah, the idea of "zero population growth"--the methods these types would use--is a scary thought. They'd probably borrow some ideas from their fellow travelers over in China, or worse.
