when you get to the point of tenth cousins i'm probably related to everyone on this forum

Wow!

However, genetics without family is kind of meaningless. I'm sure I'm a blood relation to the Swedish Royal family but....who cares? They don't. It's kind of perk of royalty that you could become what people in dog circles call "prepotent". That is, you got to bang a large number of women, some of whom bore your unmistakbale offspring.

Those offspring in less compasionate times were actually acknowledged and cared for very often. While they couldn't inherit, they could often receive an education or very minor titles and go on to spread the royal genetics. Then, as now, a good eduation or minor fortune was no guarantee of long-term success so many of these by-blows descended into the working (or poor) classes after 3 or 4 generations.
