Oswalt leaves Phillies for 'Personal Reasons'

Right-hander Roy Oswalt has left the Philadelphia Phillies for personal reasons, the team announced Wednesday, saying there is no expected date for his return.

Oswalt threw three ineffective innings in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday night and was long gone from the Philadelphia clubhouse when the game ended.

After the game, manager Charlie Manuel said Oswalt said nothing about being injured. Still, Manuel said, his ace right-hander "wasn't right."

I believe his family lives in one of the areas that was affected by tornados in the past day or so.

    So nothing sinister.

Yup. You're right. Sounds like he won't be gone that long.

    Team statement:

“There has been a tremendous amount of tornado activity near Roy’s home in Mississippi resulting in several tragic deaths and significant devastation to the area. Because of this, Roy is concerned about his family’s well-being. He has chosen to take time to make sure there wasn’t significant damage to his home, but more importantly, to make certain that his wife and children are okay.

"It is almost a year to the day that his parents’ home was destroyed by a tornado which has heightened his concern about the current situation.

We are hopeful that he will rejoin the team for his next start, but will take that day by day."

Arizona Diamondbacks 2011--Ten years ago we beat the Damn Yankees in the World Series. This year, we're striving not to be NL West basement-dwellers (again).
