Comics are pulling out all the stops now.

    Death of Spider-Man

A heartbreaking variant cover for Ultimate Comics Spider-Man

As Peter Parker sheds his mortal coil, we get a look at the cover for the issue in which he departs the Ultimate universe.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A new look and a new suit are in store for Ultimate Spider-Man, but the fate of Peter Parker — the awkward teenager who catches thieves like flies — is still a mystery.

Marvel Comics said Monday that Parker is taking off the Spidey costume for good as part of its "Death of Spider-Man" story in its Ultimate Comics imprint, but it has offered scant clues as to what ultimate fate may befall the high schooler who was bitten by a radioactive spider....

Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso said that while Parker's fate is still uncertain — "Let's just say that Peter acts like the hero he is, and pays a price for it," he said — there will be someone new slinging webs across Manhattan this summer after the current story arc written by Brian Michael Bendis with Mark Millar wraps up in "Ultimate Spider-Man" No. 160.

Spider-Man fans need not worry because the Ultimate imprint is separate from Marvel's bigger universe and whatever fate befalls Parker won't count in the pages of the other series, including "Amazing Spider-Man."

I have a feeling that this will be a way to fit Peter into the Fantastic 4.

    I don't.

Look at the cover art. That in a way looks like his Uncle Ben, who was killed. Kinda like Peter died, and Ben is there leading him away from his life here into the afterlife.

But the article isn't saying that Peter himself is dying, only that he's giving up the mantle of Spiderman.

True, but also says "Parkers Fate is Uncertian" and "He pays a price for it".

Now that leaves a lot of wiggle room, it does lend toward some thing horrid happening to Spider-man in this issue.

The last part about a "new webslinger" kinda pisses me off. Spiderman was a freak of nature. Not an assembly line product. It's just like they did with Capt. America. He'd give up, die, whatever, and then all of a sudden there was a replacement.

If your gonna off a character, then make him gone. Don't give him a cookie cutter replacement.
In most sports, cold-cocking an opposing player repeatedly in the face with a series of gigantic Slovakian uppercuts would get you a multi-game suspension without pay.

In hockey, it means you have to sit in the penalty box for five minutes.

Also goes along with some thing else Marvel said when they killed the Human Torch.

Marvel Confirms Plans To Kill a Main Character Every Quarter

Gabriel did however specify that these storylines are NOT about killing characters. What’s key is what comes AFTER the deaths. For example, after the Human Torch death, Spidey joined the team and the concept of “FF” got an entirely new focus as Future Foundation.

The difference with Capt. America is that he was manufactured hence you can always find a replacement. There are a lot of super heroes who's passed the mantle. Flash, Green Lantern, Robin, Martian Manhunter, Dr. Fate were all different people. Hell, Robin was female at one point.

yeah, but with Capt America they couldn't do it right because the important part of the formula was lost with the creator when he was killed.
