Four white teachers at an East Falls elementary school have filed federal lawsuits claiming discrimination by a former principal who allegedly suggested that they were unfit to teach black students

- the most recent episode in a racial tug-of-war that has dogged the school for several years. The teachers filed suits last week claiming that a former principal at Mifflin Elementary School, Charles Ray III, who is black, created a hostile environment at the school in 2008 and 2009.
The suits allege that Ray forced white staffers to read an article that said that "white teachers do not have the ability to teach African-American students."

The teachers also allege that the principal created "an atmosphere of distrust and favoritism" that "repeatedly sabotaged" their relationships with students and colleagues.,.,.,.The teachers - Nicole Boyd, Debra McKibben Marenbach, Colleen Yarnell and Marta Ciccimaro - are demanding more than $150,000 each.

According to the complaints, Ray allowed black teachers to "overlook, override or flat-out ignore school rules and policies, but would not allow white teachers to do the same," and publicly reprimanded them in front of parents, students and staff.....The suit alleges that class schedules and room assignments were changed at random and without notice, and that Ray refused to give the white teachers access to school supplies.

Uh, hate to tell you this, but the right led the civil rights movement. The Republican Party was founded on abolition of slavery, and it was Republicans who led the fight for civil rights when progressives like Woodrow Wilson were segregating everything in sight. FDR refused to sign anti-lynching legislation, and while he established the Civil Rights division of the Justice Department in 1939, it didn't actually convict anyone until 1946. Truman was the first liberal to take a serious interest in civil rights, but Eisenhower was the one who integrated Little Rock and enforced Brown vs. Board of Ed. It was the Democrats who have been the vanguard of the suppression of individual liberty, either through their enactment and perpetuation of Jim Crow laws, their segregation of northern cities through the use of zoning laws (big city machines were virulently racist), union rules (unions excluded minorities for decades) and various other strategies. Today, the left claims to see racism where none exists, and manufactures grievances to gain power, which undermines legitimate claims and grievances and floods the systems with false accusations.

Regardless, the story brings to light a simmering issue for white teachers in urban schools where the majority of students are African-American. To me, it is just more blame-the-teacher bullshit but instead of coming from those who loathe the public school system and want to destroy it, it comes from those who want to coddle and inculcate apathy and racial hostility in African-American children and further relieve them of the burden of personal responsibility.

But that is the modern discussion on public education for you. Student performance and commitment are never allowed to be questioned.
