Swiss village fights back after invasion of naked German hikers

The Alpine village of Appenzell is to fine anyone caught hiking in the nude because many people were offended by the naturist ramblers

Officials in the Swiss Alpine village of Appenzell have been forced to take firm action to stave off the threat of an invasion of German nudist hikers, instituting a hefty new fine for anyone caught on the mountainside in nothing but their boots and a backpack.

"This has always been a place where visitors like to come from all over the world," the Appenzell-Innerrhoden region's website proclaims. But last summer, a new and unwelcome sort of visitor made an appearance, apparently encouraged by a German naturist organisation that suggested the area's lax rules made it an ideal getaway spot for those who need fresh air on their nether regions. Worried that the recommendation would spread by word of mouth, the Appenzell authorities decided to act before the advent of spring made an unencumbered walk in the hills an appealing prospect again.

There are some people who are determined to not wear clothes in the great outdoors. There are the people who do naked rock climbing, people who hang out on a nude beach (or play volleyball in the buff on a beach like those I saw once in Greece), people who sky dive nude, dance in the nude, go on cruises in the nude, and, like this German guy I read about, people who prefer to hike in nothing but a good pair of shoes.

Even jail time is not dissuading this German fellow from his naked hiking habits, according this Reuters article. This fellow was put in jail for ten days for in the buff walkabouts, but has vowed that he will continue to hit the trails without clothes even though it is against the law. Perhaps he sees a double standard? Hiking in the nude breaks Germany's indecency laws, although nude beaching it is okay in designated areas.

Interestingly, Germany has a German Nudist Association which is part of the German Sports Association. Nudism can be traced back to Germany as a way to be healthier, so the association fits the idea of fitness. This membership has created an increase in nude hiking love. Nude jogging also has a following, but loping along in just socks and running shoes also lands a fine.

The Germans have been obsessed with nudity for 100 years now. It's all part of that Aryan Nature Worship nonsense that was mainstreamed into German society around 1900.

Americans ARE a bit uptight when it comes to nudity.

Europeans are less so.

When I lived in Miami, I lived on the beach, directly across Haulover Beach, which is a popular nude beach in the area. I did my morning walks there, not directly ON the beach, but a paved path that was about a mile long. Nudity wasn't allowed on the paths, but it was plenty visible from the path. The northern part of the beach was gay, the southern part was mixed. I saw everything, including nudist families. I was not bothered by it.

I really dont see the big deal with nudity, as long as you're respecting those around you. One shouldn't go nude in church, for example.:D
