Joplin, MO — The Joplin tornado left nearly one third of people living in the city homeless. Federal and state funds have helped families rebuild, but there is a silent victim of the storm. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, nearly 1300 animals needed shelter. "We're able to reunite almost 500 pets with their families, but unfortunately we've had a lot of animals that were not able to be reunited," said Tim Rickey with the ASPCA. The organization made a promise to the Joplin community, no animal rescued will be euthanized.

It sounds like it was much more organized than Katrina. The part about not euthanizing them is super. I used to volunteer as an adoption counselor for an organization in the St Louis area that was a kill shelter. I hated it and didn't last long there. I volunteered at the St Louis Zoo for 20 years, but lasted at the Humane Society 6 months.
