Why is DU's popularity waning? (Title edited, explanation within.)

    Last edited Wed Dec 3, 2014, 01:26 PM - Edit history (1)
What do you think is causing DU to slip further and further away from the days when it was a powerhouse?

    http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/democraticunderground.com

What happened in August/September that caused that downward trend in site popularity (edited from participation)?

EDIT: I changed the thread title from "Why is DU dying?" to "Why is DU's popularity waning?" because I misread the graph at first as traffic volume, not popularity as measured compared to other websites (which are not provided).

Thanks to ret5hd and dumbcat for pointing this out.
That's not a surprise at all. DU is 'ruled' by those who are the most intolerant liberals.

Only THEIR beliefs and viewpoints are "right", and they justify their attacks on others beliefs by claiming that those viewpoints are racist, sexist, ageist, hatred, or "stupid" and that THEY don't need to be tolerant toward them. DU claims that personal attacks are not tolerated, yet it entirely depends on who is being attacked and who is doing the attacking. Facts do not determine the 'rightness' or 'wrongness' of anything, personal biases, political correctness, and prejudices against others do.

DU is an echo chamber for some leftists and a forum to claim moral, personal and political superiority over others.

Cali_Democrat (22,581 posts) 4. Because DU used to be a place where people supported Democrats

As the election approached, a good number of posters here shit on the Democratic Party subsequently causing the traffic to this site to die down.

    It ain't rocket science.
sabrina 1 (47,605 posts) 83. Where people supported Democratic Values and not DLC/Third Way values. The demands on

partisan forums that people dismiss their principles, the MOCKERY of the word 'principles' itself in fact, has driven many people to Social Media sites where they are free to speak their minds.

The consistent DLC/Third Way attacks on Liberals, like eg, Dennis Kucinich among others, who actually did stand up for principles, the demand that people just hold their noses and 'vote' then are told to remain silent, all this has resulted in extreme partisanship over principles being rejected.

There are many other places now where people can freely express their concerns, another word mocked by the Third Way btw, the turning of actual legitimate concerns into 'ponies' etc, all this has simply moved people to find different venues.

Mixed forums are probably the future of online Political forums as ISSUES become more and more important to a majority of the people, ignored by their parties.

The 2014 midterms delivered that message loud and clear. 'We will vote on ISSUES only, and elected officials show support those issues. We will not elect people who do not represent us on the issues anymore'.

Now it's up to the Dem Party to 'get' that message. And if they do what they did in 2010, another Third Way decisions, BLAME THE VOTERS, the voters will respond as they have twice now.

    5. trolls and a general willingness to attack almost anything

I often look at threads that are rather innocuous, and within many of them, there are many rather undeserved attacks.. My guess is that when someone takes the time to put up a thread, they are not necessarily looking to start internecine fights.

Where we once had reasoned debate and suggestions that may have caused people to bend their philosophies when shown other facets of an issue, we often now have rude comments and outright attacks.. people soon tire of that, and move on.
LOL Trolls would not be able to disrupt if DU believed that other had a right to differences of opinion and were accepting of other opinions and beliefs.

    13. Oh, I imagine the numbers will skyrocket once we have President Paul in 2017

and there's a common "bad guy" for liberals to all unite against...

I know it's a whole different discussion, but you might do well to ask yourself why 90% of the black posters on DU vanished, as well...
    Cali_Democrat (22,581 posts)

    19. Bingo

African American posters fled this site in big numbers roughly around the time the Paulites/Libertarians started coming.

    It ain't rocket surgery!!

    24. I wonder if it isn't the same discussion actually

and part of the same reason so many feminists have left permanently or rarely post anymore.

    55. Really?

    You want to know?

It has lost its progressive majority. There were two or three prominent posters that have since moved on that dominated the board for months and were applauded for their DLC viewpoints. Good progressives either left or just stopped posting as much. Now, we have the right-wingers moving over to DU from Discussionist.

Many people just got tired of trying to respond to all the conservative bullshit that kept flooding the board. We no longer kick their asses out the door.

    Wow.
    He actually gets it!
People are tired of reading the Progressive hate-screed!
Even though it is funny to watch the in-fighting some times, people in general are waking up to the fact that all the DUmmies do, is scream, intimidate, and flame.
And when that does not work, the invoke RACISM!!

And even when the facts come to light (ie Ferguson), the DUmmies are too busy with their hate, to accept the fact that they were betting on the wrong horse. Again.

    Why is DU popularity waning?

Did this kentuck guy really just say they no longer ban conservatives on their site? Is that true?
"In England a king hath little more to do than to make war and give away places; which in plain terms, is to impoverish the nation and set it together by the ears. A pretty business indeed for a man to be allowed eight hundred thousand sterling a year for, and worshipped into the bargain! Of more worth is one honest man to society and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived."

White privilege has to be the problem.

It could also be that the Democrats are no longer relevant to the rank and file, the Big Tent, has become The Big Top, a three ring circus of sideshow freaks and clowns, with DU supplying the lions share of clowns and freaks.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/12/op...pgtype=article

Arguably, the poor Democratic showing among whites does not represent naked race prejudice, as Obama’s election and re-election attest. But it can be seen as a reflection of substantial material interests that affect the very voters who carry greater weight in low turnout midterm Congressional elections.

Whites as a whole, who made up 75 percent of this year’s electorate, voted for Republican House candidates by a 24-point margin, 62-38, the exact same margin by which they supported Republican candidates in the 2010 midterms. In 2006, when opposition to President George W. Bush was intense, Republicans won white voters by eight points, 52-44.

The opposition of whites to the Democratic Party is visible not only in voting behavior, but in general opposition to key Democratic policy initiatives, most tellingly in hostility toward the Affordable Care Act. A November 2013 National Journal poll found, for example, that 58 percent of whites said Obamacare would make things worse for “people like you and your family,” more than double the 25 percent that said that Obamacare would make things better.
Even the perennial black block is beginning to wonder, "When do we get a seat at the table?" They have lost the most under ObieWun and will lose even more thanks to immigration 'reform'. Despite the first bi racial president, blacks are being marginalized and maligned; crocodile tears about police brutality won't feed the bull dog on this.

Pretty simple really, they attack any newcomers as 'Low post-count trolls' as soon as they express anything remotely resembling a thought, and the high-count shitheads are either dying off (Far too slowly) or getting into insane GBCW snit fits. Over time, the lack of new blood and attrition of the old has to have a net downward effect.

If someone thinks that the Ferguson GJ made the right decision they are accused of being a "rightwinger".

If someone doesn't obediantly worship Obama, and has the audacity to criticize him, they are accused of being a conservative.

If someone doesn't buy into "white privilege" they are accused of being a "right winger".

If someone is prolife, they are a "rightwinger" even if they don't say that abortion should be illegal or restricted.

You get the idea. Even then sometimes they are tombstoned as being a "troll", "conservative".

Carol covered it nicely except for one thing: What THEY mean when they say "Conservative" is NOT the same thing sane people mean when they use the word. To them, Hitlery is viewed as possibly being a stealth Conservative, only the fact that she's also (Reportedly) a woman and attached to noted sociopath and Leftist cult hero (<and God knows why on that one) Bill Clinton keeps them from just calling her out as a 'Winger.'
