fortunately this little valley was founded by the LDS...so I am pretty safe in assuming that since the faculty at the local elementary is 90% or greater Mormon, gay history won't be on the curriculum any time soon.
As I said before, I don't really know why every American needs to know who George Washington's wife or girlfriend (aka "who he slept with") was but it's included. As for why gay figures should be identified as such, gay kids need cultural support and heroes as much as anyone else. While it's fine to declare that all children should admire all admirable historical figures regardless of their culture, ethnicity, or orientation children also look for someone in the book who is "like me".
