America's obesity epidemic shows no signs of slowing down, new findings show, as research reveals obesity rates have risen to 30 per cent or more in at least 12 states.
A 2010 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows not a single state has reported a rate of obesity below 20 per cent.
The findings are in stark contrast to a 2000 study, which showed no state had an obesity rate above 25 per cent.
Four hundred thousand adults were surveyed by phone for the analysis.
Mississippi maintained its title as the heaviest state; 34 per cent of its population were reported as obese.
The epidemic was particularly pronounced across the south.
Obesity rates were above 30 per cent in 11 other states, including West Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, Michigan, Louisiana, Kentucky, Arkansas and Alabama.
Overall the region came in at 29.4 per cent, followed by the Midwest at 28.7 per cent and the Northwast at 24.9 per cent. The West had the lowest rate with 24.1 per cent.
