EVANSVILLE - Eight hundred backpacks, stuffed full of school supplies, will go to Tri-State children with military moms and dads starting today.
Every year, the American Red Cross collects donations to make this program happen. Organizers say the goal is to show our local service men and women that the community appreciates what they do for us everyday.
Red Cross Spokesperson, Mindy Morrow says, "We have families with military staff that are overseas or they're just not at home, this is a way for our own community to be able to say how can we help our military families and make them comfortable that their kids are ready to go back to school."
The backpacks will be made available to members of the military community starting Thursday at the Red Cross. They will also be distributed through the Family Readiness Group, Marine Moms and other military support groups.
