The age of Freedom (free driving)... could be coming to an end. With the advent of GPS navigation that electronically tracks how far you drive, more states are looking at charging drivers by the mile.

Oregon, for instance, is among several states that are taking a hard look at the idea, reports Paul Eisenstein of the Detroit Bureau.

As proposed in the Oregon Legislature, drivers could be charged 0.85 cents per mile through 2015, with the figure jumping to 1.85 cents per mile by 2018. The bill, for the moment, appears stalled. Texas and Minnesota are reportedly also taking a look.

They already have a way to make people pay for miles driven. It's called a gasoline tax. This is just intrusive BS as a means of monitoring movement.

Before you can do things for people, you must be the kind of man who can get things done. But to get things done, you must love the doing, not the people!

Are they going to charge bicycle riders by the mile as well for using public roads?
The only reason they get a free ride, so to speak, is because they don't use gas.

Seems only fair that if they are going to charge cars by the mile, they should charge them as well.

This is the result of liberal higher fuel eff. cars. The more efficient they are, the less taxes they get.

Bills like this will cause an uproar among voters. It looks tempting with the taxes the could get, but voters would vote out any one who supported it.

That kind of tax would put me out of business....

At an average of $340 a weekend, PLUS the high gas prices....

We could say they are spending like drunken sailors. That would be unfair to drunken sailors, they're spending their OWN money.

It would force a lot of small business's out of business. It would also force a massive "Millage" surcharge onto of deliveries already with most including a $5 - $10 gas surcharge. Resulting in every thing people buying seeing a massive increase. No state with any common sense would support this.

They could set it up like those drive through toll booths....Key on and track the required GPS to map where you are and automatically withdraw the milage taxes from your required milage account...As you cross state lines any rate differential would be automatically tabulated and withdrawn at the end of every day.....
There would be a rate differential for driving during rush hour and on busy highways...

Driving through state capitols would trigger a rate differential and as your milage account drops below a certain threshold an special interst fee would be withdrawn until you transfere funds to the milage account..
The fees would be subject to periodic unannounced increases as each state has need of greater funding for special pork projects...

As a future project each state will institute a speciasl walking tax by tracking the GPS in your cell phone.....Ain't technology wondefull ?...
