The U.S. Justice Department sued to block enforcement of Alabama's new illegal immigration law but 14 legislators say the attempt treads on state sovereignty when the state tries to enforce what the federal government has not.
In a federal court brief filed late Monday night, attorneys for House Majority Leader Micky Hammon, R-Decatur, and Rep. Ed Henry, R-Hartselle, among others contend the federal government is undermining the state's law.
Former Athens mayor Dan Williams also is in the group.
The federal government has willfully relinquished its right to enforce its immigration law and now, the Department of Justice is trying to take away Alabama's right to enforce our own laws, Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard, R-Auburn, said in a statement.....If the federal government won't do its job and protect us, we must protect ourselves, he said.
