They set out to sell ice-cold lemonade, but now three Washington, D.C. protesters might need some legal aid.

Capitol police arrested three people Saturday afternoon for selling lemonade on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building. They were participating in “Lemonade Freedom Day” — a national demonstration against a spate of recent lemonade stand shutdowns by police and health inspectors.

I saw that, and the police officer Kathleen Bignotti should have been arrested on the spot for assaulting the videographer. She has a history of misconduct .

The shameful aspects of this video are:

1- That the police were too stupid to figure out that this was political speech, not unlicensed commerce.

2- That the crowd outnumbered the police, but did nothing to stop the arrests and misconduct on the part of the police.

Making a scene, translation: protest or political demostration. That's what the Mall is for.

How is it irrelevant? Their intent was to get arrested, and you get pissed because they did?

Their intent was political speech in the public square. You infer that they intended to get arrested. You could however express that belief to anyone who is protesting in a way that is designed to piss off the government, which is rather the definition of protest. There is no evidence that they intended to get arrested. They did indeed intend to make a scene, as do all groups who protest on the Mall.

The cops were dead wrong on this one, and they are unworthy of your support and defense.
