Canine warriors save lives daily and have earned their spot among the nationís heroes. Military working dogs make up an elite group of soldiers who run faster, see farther and have a keener sense of smell than their two-legged counterparts.
One extraordinary combatant recently passed away, from natural causes, after a year of retirement.
Ricardo and April Ramirez, of Tonopah, adopted ďBeny the Bomb DogĒ from Nellis Air Force Base soon after he returned from war in Iraq. He passed away Aug. 22, 2011, at the age of 10, after a year of well-deserved quality time with a loving family.
The weathered war veteran completed three tours of duty in Iraq. Two four-month tours were served in 2003 and 2005. His final tour lasted seven months and he returned to Nevada in August 2010.
Beny was a dual-certified German Shepherd, trained in bomb detection and attack maneuvers.
Nowadays, people like the Ramirez family are able to adopt these furry heroes, but war dogs havenít always been rewarded with such happy endings. Not so long ago they met a much grimmer fate when their duties were complete.

What a nice dog. My daughter in law's dad was in law enforcement and was able to keep his German shepherd after the dog was retired (and later him, too). The dog was a delight, terrified of their female Great Dane pup who grew up to be an enormous Dane. She pushed the poor German shepherd around all the time.

It's so good that those dogs are getting homes now after their service, instead of meeting the grim reaper right away. Greyhounds also make excellent pets after they're retired from racing or get kicked out early if they fail their training.
