The man who could trigger a world war...
    (snip)

It was he who sent the "peace flotilla" to challenge Israel's right to blockade Gaza (recognized under international law and explicitly by the U.N.). He made the inevitable violent result of that adventure into an anti-Israeli cause célèbre. He has now announced that the next peace flotilla will be accompanied by the Turkish navy.

This will put Israel in the position of either surrendering its right to defend itself, or firing on Turkish naval vessels.
There is no way to overstate the gravity of this: Erdogan is manoeuvring to create a casus belli.

The West is just watching, while Erdogan creates pretexts for another Middle Eastern war: one in which Israel may be pitted not only against the neighbouring states of the old Arab League, but also Turkey, and Iran, and Hamas, and Hezbollah.

This is what is called an "existential threat" to Israel, unfolding in live time. It could leave the West with a choice between defending Israel, and permitting another Holocaust. In other words, we are staring at the trigger for a genuine world war. With Recip Erdogan's twitching finger on it.

Given the administration's "foreign policy", and the apparent attitude toward Israel and the US military, this is exactly what we don't need. There's sixteen months left to 'tuff this out.

They think they have Israel on the ropes. Israel's military is better-equipped and better trained, plus virtually every adult in the nation has military experience. The Israeli leadership is also smarter than any of the leaders of the countries that surround it.

Iran's leader is a hateful little bastard, but most of the citizens of his nation realize it at this point. The Syrian leadership is barely hanging on and Egypt has not stablized yet from it's revolution.

Turkey has more subs, ships and military than Israel..They are a NATO member and has experience in NATO procedures...Egypt's military are still strong and have a substantial air force along with Iranian Nuclear and navel strength.... . Hamas is ready to attack and Hezbollah ready to launch their massive missile reserves no doubt armed with the remnants of Saddam's poison gas and Biological stocks...
Jordan,Egypt,Iran,Pakistan,Syria and a few other smaller nations will all join in attacking Israel...Even you with your liberal world view should be able to see what Israel is up against if it comes to war ?

This can provoke a troubling situation...

    (snip)

At the core of NATO's mutual defense commitment is Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack on one or more members of the alliance will be considered an attack on all. Also central are Article 2, which speaks of the members' commitment to their shared values and free institutions; Article 4, which provides for consultations if a member's security is threatened; and Article 10, which gives the members the option to invite additional states to join the alliance.

    (snip)

NATO is based on the principle of “collective defense,” which means that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all members. The North Atlantic Treaty ... provides for formal consultations among all members if any one feels that its "territorial integrity, political independence or security" is threatened.

    (snip)
After 9/11, the US invoked Article 5.

I see what they are up against, but I would never underestimate the intelligence or the resourcefulness of the Israelis.

They can be as resourceful as they are able but the fact remains they are badly outnumbered by a fanatical enemy bent on their total destruction...In the end it will come to Israel launching nuclear weapons against the massed Arabs .
