The thing about Detroit is this: it's not really a dangerous place for white people to visit. The areas by the stadiums or casinos (most of Downtown) are very well patrolled by cops. So is Mexicantown. But even in the worst parts of town, most of the crime victims are black, as are most of the perps.
There are still some nice residential areas, but they are few and far between. I moved to Warren in 2001, and shortly after that, the state passed a law that stated cities and municipalities could no longer force their employees to live within their geographical limits. All the cops and other city employees moved out.
