The Most Miserable Cities In America

The thing about Detroit is this: it's not really a dangerous place for white people to visit. The areas by the stadiums or casinos (most of Downtown) are very well patrolled by cops. So is Mexicantown. But even in the worst parts of town, most of the crime victims are black, as are most of the perps.



There are still some nice residential areas, but they are few and far between. I moved to Warren in 2001, and shortly after that, the state passed a law that stated cities and municipalities could no longer force their employees to live within their geographical limits. All the cops and other city employees moved out.

It doesn't help when they show a picture of an abandoned factory to represent Detroit, yet show happy seniors in their Florida pictures, or showgirls in Vegas, football games in one city, or Disney Princesses to represent Orlando.


We don't have Vegas showgirls, or Disney Princesses, but we do have professional athletic teams with nice stadiums and dancers from the titty bars!

I have never been to Detroit. I understand that like many of the old industrial cities, it has some very nice residential sections and some urban renewal areas that are quite impressive. My disdain for the city and region is largely founded in the weather, because without good weather the rest of Detroit's problems simply aren't worth putting up with.

To a lesser degree San Francisco is the same way. A large portion of San Francisco is a crime ridden and filthy human dump, but the relatively good weather and beauty from certain angles redeem the city, especially if you can afford to live in or hang out in the Castro, Noe Valley, Haight (for the hipness) , or Pacific Heights.

Fun fact to know and tell, did you know that the westernmost point of Virginia is west of Detroit ?

Same for St. Louis. I've been to the bad parts of Detroit. But there are places in this area I will NOT go into.

Are you talking E St Louis? There are some really bad parts of St Louis (in the hood) that I'd never enter. When I was working as an outside sales rep there, I'd have customers from the bad areas come to my office. I made up excuses why I wouldn't go to their office, but I'm sure that they understood. :D

How ironic, move to "paradise", take a hit on my house in St Louis (but nothing like the hits down here), get this place that has taken another hit, but the assessor is raising the value to get more taxes to pay for stuff like a $12.5 million comples in the Sarasota small "hood".

So after all this, managed to move from an area not even showing in the top 21 list of "miserable" cities to #6 in the misery index. Now maybe folks will understand why I don't buy lottery tickets or gamble. :p

There isn't much wrong with any given city that a bulldozer can't fix.
