Do I Need to Separate My Cats??

I discovered deviant behavior this week. I have two male cats as most of you know. A two year old Tuxedo who is dominant, and a young male kitten, about 5 months old.

The Tuxedo was humping the kitten the other day..and I'm pretty sure he violated the poor thing. I have been separating them for the most part, except for the litter box, which is kept in the garage and accessible by a cat door. The kitten is staying away from the older cat.


What do I do? I didn't know homosexuality was prevalent in the cat kingdom

BTW: they are both neutered.

I did a search, and read that it's a sign of dominance....Still, I don't want the kitten to be bullied. BAsically, he's showing the kitten who is boss.

Yes it's a sigh of dominate heck i've seen neutered dogs do this. It should subside when the kitty grows up

You found the answer before I saw the thread. Kids used to ask me at the St Louis Zoo why the one large turtle was on the backside of another turtle. It was kind of hard to explain the dominance thing, but I told the kids that they were trying to decide which one was boss.

I'd keep an eye on them to make sure that the kitten isn't hurt, but suspect the problems should settle down a bit when the little one acknowledges that the older one is boss.

The greyhounds here play the dominance game from time to time---which one gets to go through the door first, which one pushes up to be petted on the head first, etc. They've never let it go beyond that, although Xena will growl at Darlene from time to time. She used to only growl at my poor Blue boy, but now that he died, they're in some sort of truce.

Maybe greyhounds are just different, but the male greyhounds I've had always were the sweetest dogs ever. They got along with other male greys, seemed to like to have a buddy, never heard a growl from Jessie, Jackson or Blue.

The female greys generally tend to be more dominant. Even my little sweet, dearly departed Tiny grabbed Blue by the throat when he annoyed her. Of course she didn't do any damage as her teeth had always been bad and she was gumming it by the time she turned aggressive on him.

Xena had growled at poor Blue repeatedly and often blocked him from either entering or leaving a room. With people she's very sweet and gentle, but amazed me when she even growled at SR a couple of times when he was going to move a bone.

Darlene is generally sweet, but she growled once or twice at Blue. Poor dogs eyes about bugged out of his head. He couldn't believe "his girl" had done that to him.

Usually with most breed dogs (not sure about cats) same sex dogs do not get along as well, more aggression shown. When I had 3 male schnauzers long ago, it was a nightmare. Those little dogs were always grabbing the other by the throat. After the last one departed this earth, I swore I'd only have more gentle dogs.

The only time you separate a cat is for frying, you leave them whole for baking or barbeque, they stay more moist.

What my dear wife left out about Poor Blue and my Xena is that shortly after I moved up to St. Louis with Xena, Blue fell on Xena by accident. He didn't mean to, his long legs just got tripped up when he tried to walk past Xena one day. But she never forgave him for that and she did growl at him and keep him "hostage" some times. :D He'd cry and one of us would rescue him from the eeeeevil Xena!!!:D
