Wow, that's a big one. Fortunately Hokkaido isn't too heavily populated.

I used to live in Japan and there were little earthquakes all the time. Nothing serious, just a lot
of shaking. Still, it was pretty scary, living in a paper and wood house that was heated by
kerosene type heaters in every room.
