What bands that I might actually have heard of (not Rancid Puke or something you see on a nightclub marquee in Pittsburgh or Ocean City) that are officially metal bands?

I ask, because one time someone told me he liked Punk, but every Punk act I named he said "wasn't really punk".

Try me. I am a punk fan. It is the music of my youth so it is the music of my culture.

I'm not exactly sure what the definition of "metal" is these days.

Yeah, back during the 80's and such,it meant stuff like Black sabbath,Ozzy Osbourne,Megadeth,Metallica,Queensryche,Iron Maiden and such.

But now it seems to mean stuff like black metal, death metal and such.

Yep, the bands you listed are exactly what I grew up listening to, in addition to others that anyone here would know by name.

it's because metal sucks, i had to listen to it growing up when hanging with my friends, can't understand a word of it cuz it's all noise and screaming. Yeah, there are bands with good songs, but the genre as a whole blows.

Jazz, Blues, Country, Soul, Alternative all much better music.

A good example of a metal band dealing with a classic.
