HE’S HOME: Fallen Marine to be buried today

Graveside services are today for a Marine killed in Afghanistan last week.

Cpl. Jon-Luke Bateman was just 22 when he died. The 2007 Pahrump Valley High School graduate and another young Marine, Lance Cpl. Kenneth Cochran, 20, of Wilder, Idaho, were electrocuted during an accident involving a broken electric generator.

Bateman’s beloved motorcycle, a fire engine red Harley with cracked rock graphics on the sides, sat in the lobby as a reminder of one of his greatest passions in life.

According to the Marine Corps, this was Bateman's first combat deployment although he had deployed once before with an expeditionary unit.

His Marine Corps service began Feb. 25, 2008. He was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton.

His awards included the Purple Heart medal, Combat Action ribbon, good conduct medal, National Defense Service medal, Global War on Terrorism Service and Expeditionary medals, Afghanistan Campaign medal, and the NATO Medal for International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan

    Welcome home, Marine.
Olde-style, states' rights conservative. Ask if this concept confuses you.

    THE FALLEN SOLDIER

    Don't weep for me
    O' Land of the free
When it was my time to fall
    'Twas for my country's call
'Twas for the land that I loved,
    That I gave my all
And for the land that I loved,
    I did freely give
    And in her freedom
    And her courage
    I'll continue to live
