Singer Davy Jones of The Monkees has died of a heart attack at 66, the medical examiner's office in Martin County, Fla. has confirmed to NBC News.

The news was originally reported by TMZ.

Jones was most famous for his role in the pop group The Monkees, which was put together in 1965 for the TV show of the same name. Their hits included "Daydream Believer," "Last Train to Clarksville," "I'm a Believer," and "Pleasant Valley Sunday." They also charted with the theme song from the show.

He also made a famous appearance on "The Brady Bunch."

In 2008, Yahoo Music named him the top teen idol of all time.

I remember driving round in High School in the mid 80's with their Greatest Hits tape cranked up in my car.

Little known useless music trivia fact: David Bowie is said to have come up with the last name of "Bowie" when he got a recording contract because the name David "Davy" Jones was already associated with the Monkees lead singer...Jones was Bowie's real last name.

What a shame. I was quite a fan back in the day.

We are indeed all getting old.

My mom and I watched them at the state fair some years ago. Mom always talked about what a crush she had on Davy (what girl didn't!). She still has their old records. Like those big round black discs. And a turntable to play them on. She'll probably do that today. LOL.

Somewhere, Marcia Brady is shedding a tear.

Yes, Jen, most of us know what "records" are/were.

Yeah, it was a kind of joke. I had no doubt you all were older than dirt.

No kidding. Davy was only ten years older than I am.
