Blackburn Bill Would Strip TSA Badges and Uniforms

Washington, Dec 8, 2011 - Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) has introduced legislation to rein in the Transportation Security Administration and provide more transparency for American travelers. H.R. 3608, the Stop TSA's Reach In Policy (STRIP) Act, would prohibit any TSA employee not trained as a federal law enforcement officer or eligible for federal law enforcement benefits from wearing law enforcement uniforms or wearing a police-like metal badge. In 2005 TSA made administrative changes reclassifying the title of airport security screeners to Transportation Security Officers (TSO's) and changed their uniforms to resemble those of a federal law enforcement officer. In 2008, TSA added metal badges to the uniforms, similar to those worn by federal law enforcement. However, TSO's are not required to receive any law enforcement training and they are not eligible for federal law enforcement benefits.

Despite the fact that TSO's are 'officers' in name only, some have chosen to abuse their limited authority against the unsuspecting public. Earlier this year in New Jersey, a TSO was arrested for impersonating an officer and days before Thanksgiving a Virginia woman was brutally raped after a TSO approached her in uniform, waving his badge.

“It is outrageous that in a post 9/11 world that the American people should have to live in fear of those whose job it is to keep us safe," Blackburn said. "Congress has sat idly by as the TSA strip searches 85 year old grandmothers in New York, pats down 3 year olds in Chattanooga, and checks colostomy bags for explosives in Orlando. Enough is enough! The least we can do is end this impersonation which is an insult to real cops."

I'm sorry but I really cant take anyone seriously when they superimposed the "TSA" emblem over a Nazi symbol. They are not the same thing......not even remotely.

I don't take you seriously either and I'm sure Janice doesn't

I hope they strip the uniforms and badges and then dismantle the entire agency. A few guidelines from the fed govt would have been sufficient. Nothing has changed to improve safety in air travel. The TSA puts travelers through kabuke theater and passes it off as security. My dealings and observations of these clowns leaves me dispairing over the cost versus reward.

What a farce it is now. And an expensive one as AmPat points out.

At the very least the entire charade should have been privatized from the get go. But I guess we'll just have to wait until fascism goes out of style again. If it does.

Does that sound extreme? I hope so.

Yes TSA and nazism is not the same. But it does make a point.

Whatever, it is your right as bacon to not take me seriously.

I'm sure you were outraged when Senator Dick "Turban" Durbin compared the US soldiers that run Gitmo to the SS, am I correct? My outrage is the same here. For as much as I dislike the TSA, they aren't nazis and anytime someone tries to correlate them, they lose the argument by the very nature that they shouldn't be taken seriously. Call it Goodwin's law or whatever you want, the message becomes lost either way.

No it doesn't. Your point becomes lost the moment you compare the two.

It is a farce at least is was a few yrs back and I haven't heard any good reviews since. About 7 yrs back we flew home to see my dad. I had bought him a jack knife collection encased in a book sized wooden box. This TSA guy confiscated a baby fingernail clipper from my 7 yr old girl but looked at the locked wooden box asked what was in it and I told them. Never asked if I had a key or not. Passed it through.
The 21st century. The age of Smart phones and Stupid people.

It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

Only lost on you, socialism, fascism , totalitarian government is slowly creeping over us and you are to naive to recognize it. No matter you will make a good little obedient subject if it every fully consumes us, the will probably make you a block monitor to report any uppity's with individual thought patterns.
