    “Pink slime” results from grinding together connective tissue and beef scraps normally used to make dog food or for rendering (that would be fat to make lard). The grindings are then treated with ammonia hydroxide, which kills pathogens such as E coli and salmonella. The term pink slime was first coined by microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein in 2002.
    It is estimated that up to 70% of the nation’s grocery stores’ ground beef contains pink slime.
    Follow the link to see if your local store mixes the slime with the "good meat". It looks like you're safe at a Super Target, Whole Foods, Publix and others. Beware of some of the places. Check it out for yourself. This probably explains the difference in pricing. Personally, I don't really want that slime. If I wanted it, I guess we could purchase a can of dog food cheaper.

    I've been hearing a lot about this and seen a lot of coverage on it, however, not once have I heard that it's harmful.

    Somehow your statement doesn't surprise me.

    I don't like greasy burgers, usually buy the 90% lean stuff. It's a good basis for chili, pasta (with meatballs or meat sauce) or a burger on the grill.

    I shop at Meijer, which had a yes and no answer, which I think is kind of freaky.


    Luckily, I never buy ground beef or hamburger. I substitute ground turkey in most recipes that call for it, for one thing, and as a single person, I don't really make burgers at home, I get them at restaurants.

    I like the stuff fine, but my doctor wanted various numbers to come down (like those yummy triglycerides) - and they are coming down!. THIS time, it's not snobbery.

    All of my pasture animals are made out of meat so I don't have to buy any.
