LinkA man injured while white-water kayaking in northeast Victoria yesterday broke his own leg to escape.
The 38-year-old became trapped under a tree in the West Kiewa River and was close to drowning when he decided to snap his lower leg to save his life, paramedics said.
"The flow of the water was pushing him under a tree where he was pinned and at risk of drowning," intensive care flight paramedic Anthony De Wit said.
"So he actually broke his leg to get himself out of his kayak.
"With him being trapped, he had to push his way out and free his legs, so that was the only way he could get himself out."
In echoes of US climber Aron Ralston, who five years ago amputated his own arm to avoid dying of thirst in remote Utah, the paddler broke both bones in his shin.
*scratches kayaking off my list of things to do.*
