1693 - Gregorio de Salinas Varona left Monclova, Coahuila, on a relief expedition to take supplies to the troubled missions of East Texas.
1903 - Robert B. Vandervoort, Corpus Christi native, performed his famed loop-the-loop for King Edward VII at a command performance in London. Vandervoort's stage name was "Diavalo."
1968 - In Houston, at St. Luke's Hospital Everett Thomas received the first heart transplant in the United States. Thomas lived for 204 days. The surgeon was Denton Cooley.
1976 - Paul McCartney made his first American stage appearance in 10 years. The "Wings Over America" tour began in Ft. Worth, TX.
1980 - Ferguson Jenkins (Texas Rangers) became the fourth player to win 100 games in the American League and the National League.
1997 - The "Republic of Texas" surrendered to authorities ending an armed standoff where two people were held hostage. The group asserts the independence of Texas from the U.S.
