Merkle is know for something a bit more ominous. In 1908, the Giants had runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 out with Merkle on 1st. The next batter hit a single up the middle and the runner on 3rd scored the winning run...however, Merkle running from first, just turned and jogged back to the dugout thinking the game was over but one of the Cubs fielders retrieved the ball and threw to 2nd baseman Johnny Evers(of Tinkers, to Evers, to Chance fame) for the force on Merkle. Since everyone, fans included, thought the game was over, the field was teaming with fans because the win put the Giants in 1st place but since Merkle was forced at 2nd, the run didn't score so it remained tied and the play was legal because the home plate ump saw that Merkle didn't touch 2nd and since it was too dark to play on let alone a thousand fans were on the field so the game had to replayed which the Cubs won en route to their last World Championship. This would go on to be known as Merkle's Boner.
